I inherited a good gaming computer, however it is runnign on Windows Vista Ultimate, with some reason, 32 bit. The processor at hand can handle 64 bit, and I want to update the OS to a newer one.

So you would need to either format and install Vista 64bit and then upgrade that to Windows 8.1.
